Training discipline, step by step

Date

I have a love and hate relationship with personal development theories. I’m not going to lie to you, every time I come across a life coach I feel like I’m close to dying from excessive eye rolling.

HOWEVER, I too have my weaknesses. And that weakness is constantly looking for tips and tricks to improve my productivity, develop certain skills and establish better habits. And that is also Kamak’s message. What we want is for you to be yourself AND pursue your goals and dreams. After all, we are a community of warriors.

Last week, our favorite editor, Serena, described discipline as a muscle you exercise. Today, I take the discussion a step further, by sharing with you some tips that could help you in this process.

Vision

Who has time to wander aimlessly? Person. What is your ultimate goal? How do you imagine your life in 25 years? What kind of woman do you want to become? Make it a list, a vision, and hang it somewhere VERY visible. Every day, you need to be able to read and reread this document, so make it something that is attractive, that motivates you and that stirs your soul.

Some people do it in the form of vision boards, others prefer to write longer or shorter texts. Some even record themselves (in audio or video) and leave a message for their “future me”. Whichever method you choose, don’t skip this step.

Goals

I’m not advocating annual goals. A year is far too long and you can change course along the way. For me, 3 months is the perfect balance between “just enough” and “not too long”. Avoid despair or boredom.

Your goals for the three months should be separated into categories, for example: fitness, work, finances, relationships… whatever works for you. Under each category, put only ONE goal that will bring you closer to your 25-year-old vision. Wording is important, so make sure you write your goal in a positive, motivational, and uplifting way. For example :

In 3 months, I RUN a 10 km.

Weekly Actions

Now is the time to take action. Each week, review your goals and think about the best steps you can take to achieve them. Oprah says it better than me:

The challenge is to stand still, and answer the question: what is the next action? What must I do now ?

Oprah Winfrey

Don’t get lost in the overflowing overview. You’ve done the work of determining what YOUR vision is, in Step 1. Now is the time to focus on the present moment.

Don’t think about it again

Make your decisions ONCE, then go on autopilot. You cannot make decisions every time you need to perform an action. If necessary, have a little “pep talk” in front of the mirror, encourage each other, decide on your action and then get started. MUST.

How do you stop overthinking before you take action? One of the best techniques is to count to 5 and then get moving. This concept was formulated by Mel Robbins during his TedTalk :

“If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you have to physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea.”

Mel Robbins

Have you decided to go running? Count backwards: 5…4…3…2…1 PUT ON YOUR SHOES!

Autopilot mode. And, if you’re in the mood, you can sing along to one of my favorite hits, Ciara’s Level Up .

It is by forging that one becomes a blacksmith

The more you practice self-discipline, the better off you will be. As we explained in our previous article , discipline is a muscle that needs to be trained. By having a vision you believe in, and clear steps as to what you need to do to achieve it, you will ensure your own success. Admittedly, it is not easy, but you are capable of it.

Be the warriors of your life. You will not regret it 😉
